The aircraft crashed while attempting to break a transatlantic flight record. Heavily loaded with fuel, the pilots failed to detect the aircraft had gone into a slight descent shortly after becoming airborne. The plane struck some power lines and crashed near the Massachusetts Turnpike. The dead included six journalists.
